6061 vs 7075 Aluminum

1. Ingredient difference:

The 6061 aluminum alloy consists of 97.9 percent aluminum, 1 percent magnesium, and 0.6 percent silicon, with 0.28 percent copper and 0.2 percent chromium added.

The composition of the 7075 aluminum alloy roughly includes 5.6-6.1%, 2.1-2.5% zinc, magnesium 1.2-1.6% copper, less than half a percent, silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, and other metals. It usually produces several grades of hot temper, 7075-O, 7075-T6, and 7075-T651.

2. Hardness difference:

6061 has a hardness of 90HB.

The hardness of 7075 can reach 150HB.

3. Series differences:

6061 in 6000 series aluminum alloy.

7075 in 7000 series aluminum alloy, zinc magnesium-aluminum alloy.

4. Different mechanical properties:

Alloy Yield Shear Tensile
6061 7KSI 10KSI 13KSI
7075 15KSI 22KSI 33KSI
6061—T6 31KSI 17KSI 35KSI
7075–T6 73KSI 48KSI 83KSI

5. Usage differences:

Because of the price, the 6061 can be used in a variety of places where aluminum alloys are not required, while the 7075 and 7005 are usually used for commercial applications such as aerospace, high hardness, and low density. So 7075 is usually a commercial aluminum alloy.

6. Price difference:

The price of 6061 is generally 18-30 yuan per kilogram, while the price of 7075 is generally 40-60 yuan per kilogram. Therefore, the sales volume of 6061 is relatively high, while the sales volume of 7075 is less than 6061 due to the price.
