The application of Aluminium in construction and architecture slowed in the 1940s, as the metal was predominantly used for producing planes. It even earned a second name, “winged metal.” But as early as the middle of the twentieth century, Aluminium sheet became more and more popular in the construction of high-rise buildings and bridges. Window frames, panels, domed roofs and other wide-span constructions and ornaments were increasingly made with Aluminium. Today, it is used for roofs, siding, translucent panes, window and doorframes, staircases, air conditioning systems, solar protection, heating systems, furniture and many other things.
Sheet, the most widely used form of aluminum, is found in all of the aluminum industry’s major markets. In packaging, sheet is used to manufacture cans and packages. In transportation, aluminum sheet is used to manufacture panels for automobile bodies and tractor trailers. Sheet is used in home appliances and cookware. In building and construction, it is formed into products including siding, gutters, roofing, awnings and carports. Sheet aluminum can be color-anodized to black, gold, red, blue and hundreds of other colors. It can be etched to a matte finish, polished to a sparkling brightness or textured to resemble wood and painted.
5083 aluminum sheet is a high strength material, exhibiting higher strength than 5052 sheet.5083 H116 is an alloy used for high strength welded applications, with excellent marine environment corrosion resistance. It has a superior “skin finish” developed to prevent skin lamination, thus providing even better resistance to inter-granular corrosion than alloy 5083 H321. It has higher Tensile and Yield strengths than Alloy 5086 but less than 5456. Aluminium 5083 is a strong magnesium-manganese-chromium-aluminium alloy. It can be hardened by cold work, but is not heat treatable to higher strength. It has good ductility for the strength level, better than most other 5000 series alloys. Aluminium alloy 5083 contains 5.2% magnesium, 0.1% manganese and 0.1% chromium. In the tempered condition, it is strong, and retains good formability due to excellent ductility. It has the low density and excellent thermal conductivity common to all aluminium alloys. Alloy 5083 is best known as a plate for ship building.The alloy is also produced as extruded seamless tube and other extrusions and as forgings.
